直布羅陀發行 The Royal British Legion 紀念郵票和小型張

直布羅陀於201年1月14日為皇家英國軍團90周年發行了紀念郵票和小型張。

郵票以小版張形式印刷，邊緣印有罌粟花和英軍各種勳扣。

小型張中央相信是戰爭紀念碑的圖像，四周是海陸空三軍的圖像配上地面種滿罌粟花。

皇家英國軍團 (The Royal British Legion) 成立於1921年5月15日，合併了當時四個組：the National Association of Discharged Sailors and Soldiers; the British National Federation of Discharged and Demobilized Sailors and Soldiers; Comrades of The Great War and the Officers’ Association 。它的成立主要是來自當時曾參與第一次世界大戰的的陸軍元帥Earl Haig 和 Federation of Discharged and Demobilized Sailors and Soldiers 的 T F Lister 先生。1971年5月成立50周年時獲英女王給予皇家稱號。

它是現時英國最大的慈善組織，目的在維護正在服役及已退役士兵的福利、利益和記憶。它亦是英國每年11月和平紀念日活動的監護人。

組織以罌粟花為標誌是由於加拿大軍醫McCrae 上校在第一次世界大戰戰爭過後法國北部與比利時附近的Flanders 及 Picardy 地區，看見在戰場長出罌粟花。他被所見的花海感動而寫出一首名為In Flanders’ Fields的詩：

In Flanders’ Fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders ’ Fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders’ Fields.
